What should you do when a man’s best friend comes running at you when you’re taking a relaxing afternoon jog down Las Olas Blvd. or Wilton Drive? Follow these steps to ensure your safety at all times:
1. Never Panic: Dogs can sense fear, which will intrigue them more. Always stay calm and do not draw more attention to yourself.
2. Do Not Seem Threatening: Try to stay as still as possible, keep your hand by your side and do not make eye contact. This will make you seem less threatening and often times the canine will lose interest.
3. Distract: Try to find an item, such as a water bottle, to distract the canine with. If you are traveling in an unknown area, you may want to carry a small treat or two with you just in case. Once the dog is distracted, this will give you enough time to escape.
4. Receive Medical Help Immediately: If a dog is successful and attacks, you need to seek medical treatment immediately.
